In 2018, hospitals were spending $83 billion per year on new medical equipment. The amount of plastics, metals, greenhouse gas emissions, and water wasted to produce these necessary, life-saving pieces of equipment is astronomical. At ZRG Medical we reduce the amount of waste going to the landfills and the environmental impact of medical equipment production by refurbishing and reselling the medical equipment that hospitals no longer want.
Plastic in landfills can take 1,000 years to degrade in a landfill. Even if we do get that far, the environmental consequences of allowing that to happen are enormous. Plastic microparticles end up in our soil, our groundwater, and ourselves. Primary producers, plants, take these pollutants up through their roots. When another animal, a primary consumer, eats these plants, the microparticles then end up inside of them. And the continuation of this occurs at every trophic level, until finally, we as humans end up with these plastic microparticles inside of us. Many of them contain known carcinogens, and all are derived from petroleum, the same stuff they make to use gas for your car. This is not the only way these plastic microparticles end up inside of us though. We also end up drinking the water that is contaminated by the plastic. But what about our atmosphere?
While plastics lay in the landfill and degrade, they emit methane and ethylene, two greenhouse gases that trap much more heat than carbon dioxide. These gases are the basis of all climate change. As our atmosphere becomes more and more polluted by these greenhouse gases, they do not allow the heat from the earth to dissipate out into space. The excess heat that gets trapped in our atmosphere changes weather patterns, creates extreme droughts, raises the risk of wildfires, and changes the way we have to think about living. So that is what we do here at ZRG. We recognize the importance and necessity of human health, and we know that we can close the loop by refurbishing, donating, and reselling medical equipment.
There are many third world or developing countries that cannot afford the newest, state-of-the-art equipment. That does not mean that they should go without equipment. In fact, the equipment that we acquire from hospitals through our asset disposition services is very vital to the life-saving capabilities of these countries. But it does not pertain to just the third world. Much of the equipment that we receive, test, and repair, is a great option for doctors here in the United States. The benefit of buying these items from us is that it also creates a more sustainable, healthy planet for all of us.
